A Woman of Strength
Gregory and Patricia are a husband and wife team that have been happily married for over 35 years. We founded MOMMA USE-TA SAY as a brand to honor and preserve the life, love, lessons, and legacy of Black Mommas. We have chosen to use the idioms in the actual dialect they were spoken because these “sayings” have the power to tell our momma’s stories and a story can be a powerful tool. Although the language may be simplistic in verbiage, it represents the ancestry of who they were and who they became. We are hopeful it will inspire meaningful conversations that will help bridge our past, present and future. This brand will represent the historically underrepresented voices, experiences and viewpoints from mommas who had no value or voice outside of their community.
Who and what we become in life is determined by the wisdom that is passed down to us by example and/or words spoken to us. Our Mommas used profound words to instruct, inspire and impact our lives. We both had a very strong emotional connection to our mommas and all of the lessons we learned from these amazing women has greatly contributed to the man and woman we are today. Because of their unique ability to think and the strength they showed in adversity, we want to pass down these ideas from generation to generation.
You don’t have to be Black to wear MOMMA USE-TA SAY apparel. As all of us who grew up in the South know; all mommas had a way of expressing themselves with “colorful language.” We are hopeful that this apparel will make you laugh, learn and appreciate our way of experiencing life through a unique vernacular.
For the love and honor of our mommas, we look forward to bringing our momma’s voices of wisdom to a national market.
COMMEMORATING, CELEBRATING, AND CONGRATULATING THE STRENGTH, COURAGE AND WISDOM OF BLACK MOMMAS!
LOGO, LOVE & LEGACY
Our logo symbolizes lips that spoke words of wisdom from generation to generation. “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness” Proverbs 31:26. The red lip is representative of a story momma told us. In the late 1940’s momma walked into a segregated small town drug store and purchased her first tube of RED lipstick. Purchasing lipstick was a luxury and the store only offered two colors; red and burgundy. Throughout her life she only wore shades of red and burgundy.
Our Mommas’ love of family and faith was unconditional.
Legacy – We want their life stories and wisdom to live on and to enhance cultural awareness.
